Looks like I'm registering as a Democrat

It is highly likely that I will register as a Democrat within the next few weeks. For those family members and longtime friends who have just picked themselves up off the floor, please realize this isn't the first time I've done this, and it's a good reason I'm doing it again. In '92 I registered as a democrat in Ohio for two reasons. The main reason was that there was a battle for the democratic nomination for the House of Representatives which had a pro-life democrat facing a pro-choice one. The Republican they would face in the general election was also pro-choice. Sincebeing re-elected then, this representative, Tony Hall, was appointed to the UN by a then popular President Bush, so obviously I was not the only conservative that respected Mr. Hall's work. I believe this is the only time I have voted in a General election for a democrat too. The second reason, which really wasn't much of a reason, was that I could vote against Bill Clinton as the democratic nominee to face the incumbent George H.W. Bush (41). I actually voted for Linda Ronstadt's husband, Jerry Brown. Actually, I don't think I changed my registration until '96 when I guess I needed to vote for Bob Dole in the primary.

But anyhow, the North Carolina Primary is not until May. After last night's results, it appears the Republican race will be over by then, but barring a huge mishap, the Dem race will still be close and undecided. About a year ago, I re-registered as an independent, so now I will need to change this and register as a Democrat. I would much rather have influence in the race that matters than the one that is settled. I suspect I'm not the only one thinking this. the number of people registered as democrats across the states who have not voted yet is likely to skyrocket within the next few weeks and even more so once the Republican ticket is fully settled.

  1. My jaw remains firmly in place....and I have a big smile on my face :) Unfortunate rhyme, but you get the drift.

  2. Now you know this doesn't mean I'm voting Dem in the General Election, right? :-)

  3. Leave to me to focus on the importance of music history and the facts that revolve around that. Linda and Jerry were never married.

Years ago while listening to a commentary by Jerry Springer (before his trash TV show) while he was mayor of Cincinnati, he stated that he and Jerry Brown had 3 things in common:
    1. They are both named Jerry.
    2. They both have a thing for Linda Ronstadt.
    3. Neither of them would ever be president. (Jerry Springer was born in England, but in retrospect, his career path may have played a role. As an aside, he was an excellent mayor!)

I am concerned about your mother's reaction. She still finds it hard to believe that she gave birth to a democrat. (That would be your oldest sister!)

    Love,
    Your oldest sister

  4. Actually it's my belief that it takes a village to raise a democrat, so mom, take heart. ;-)

Actually I was thinking after I wrote this, "I wonder what mom might think?" It occurred to me then that the closest she ever became to being a democrat was complimenting and empathizing with Jimmy Carter's concession speech. :-)

  5. Why register as a Democrat? There is no one among them worth voting for.

  6. Rob,
I'm encouraged by your response. I thought you might say you'd register as one too, just to cancel out my vote for Obama. :-)

  7. I wish I were as clever as my oldest daughter and youngest son, then I could post something witty. Unfortunately, I am not. Just suffice it to say, I don't think we have much choice in this election. Democrat or republican.
